Uncertainty Flag

An uncertainty flag is a record marker used to identify information that has not yet been confirmed. It may apply to source, date, rights, taxonomy, measurements, provenance, or interpretation.

Uncertainty flags build trust by showing what is known and what remains provisional. They help prevent uncertain information from being presented as fact.

  • Look for words such as possible, probable, unverified, unknown, or pending review.
  • Ask which field the uncertainty applies to.
  • Do not treat flagged information as final.
  • Check whether the record explains what evidence is missing.

Ask students to mark uncertain claims in a sample object record. Then ask how the wording should change.

Public sources will be added as this entry is reviewed and expanded.
