Sensitivity Level

Sensitivity level describes how carefully a public record, image, object, or topic should be handled in a museum or educational context.

It helps determine whether content can be public, whether it needs additional context, or whether it should be restricted.

Sensitivity level supports public trust and careful interpretation. It helps records avoid treating all objects as equally simple, neutral, or appropriate for every audience.

A sensitivity level may consider:

  • whether the material is low-sensitivity educational content
  • whether it involves biological material
  • whether cultural, ethical, or personal concerns may apply
  • whether images require additional context
  • whether public access should be limited

Ask students why a teaching skeleton model, digital diagram, and sensitive specimen record may need different levels of explanation and access.

Public sources will be added as this entry is reviewed and expanded.

This entry explains public documentation and interpretation categories. It does not provide handling, acquisition, display approval, legal, or biological material processing guidance.
